All of our students have a variety of opportunities to perform in concerts and recitals. Yamaha group lesson students have end-of-semester "in-class" recitals and parties, can play in our monthly Saturday afternoon Performance Club, and end the year with the annual All School Concert.
Private lesson students perform each semester at the Private Lesson Recitals and are also welcome to play in one of the Performance Clubs.
All School Concert
All School Concert
Our academic year at YMS Boston culminates in the All School Concert, a wonderful opportunity for all YMES group class students to perform alongside one another on stage. Students perform for an audience comprised of over 2,000 family members, friends, teachers, and fellow students. Each concert also features at least one Junior Original Concert (JOC) performance. JOC celebrates the importance of creativity and self-expression with student original compositions.
Private Lesson Recitals
Private Lesson RecitalsEach semester, our private lesson students have the opportunity to participate in our Private Lesson Recitals. Performing at our recitals is an excellent way for students to build confidence in their performing abilities, technique, and overall musicianship. Plus, the Private Lesson Recitals provide an excellent goal to work towards throughout the semester! Students present their hard work and musical growth as they perform in front of a supportive audience.
Junior Original Concert
Junior Original ConcertJunior Original Concert (JOC) is a one-of-a-kind musical showcase for children around the world who have participated in the Yamaha Music Education System. Through JOC these young musicians have the opportunity to unlock their full musical potential by composing original pieces and performing them before enthusiastic audiences.Every year, JOC composers/performers are invited to perform in different countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Their compositions include pop, classical and modern style.
The first JOC was held in Nemu-no-Sato, Japan, in 1972. Since then Junior Original Concerts have been held in 28 countries, and with renowned orchestras such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C., conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich; the Vienna Symphony, conducted by Horst Stein; and the New World Symphony, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.
Often acclaimed as the "Young Ambassadors of Music," JOC performers spread the message of music -- which goes far beyond words -- throughout the world.
Our performance clubs are casual mini-recitals held at the school approximately twice per semester. Performance Club is a relaxed and supportive environment. Parents, siblings, and friends are welcome to attend (space and seating is limited). Students experience the fun of sharing their music with others and learn performance etiquette (how to be a good performer and a good audience member). Performing in a recital or performance club is motivating for students and helps to build a sense of accomplishment and confidence!
